The Breeder behind the Paris

How it all began

The potato variety Paris was developed by Dutch potato breeder Jan van Loon. In 2016 , Paris was officially registered on the Dutch variety list by The Potato Company (TPC).

Paris was specifically developed for baby potato production, yielding an exceptional number of tubers. Up to 2.5 million per hectare, with a maximum size of 40 mm.

With Paris, TPC & Jan Van Loon have contributed to the development of innovative potato varieties, but also to sustainable and efficient farming practices. His breeding work demonstrates how targeted selection can lead to varieties that combine high quality (yield, taste, and cooking properties) with strong disease resistance.

Why is Paris for "Smart farmers" ?

High financial yield and early harvest

  • Paris is a mid-early variety.
  • Ideal for multiple crops per season.
  • High yield per hectare = more profit.

 Strong disease resistance

  • Paris has good resistance to Phytophtora (late blight).
  • Less crop protection needed = lower costs and better for the environment.
  • Smart farmers save on chemicals and reduce risk.

Uniform tubers with good skin finish

  • Easy to sort and sell.
  • Suitable for both fresh consumption and processing (air fryer and oven meals).
  • Long shelf live in supermarkets (no greening).
  • Less waste = higher market value.

 Climate-resilient

  • Performs well under drought or stress conditions.
  • Perfect for farmers dealing with changing climate conditions.
